Committed to quality out of passion - the history of the company.
It is 1894 and great achievements await humanity. The Emperor Wilhelm II. opens the Reichstag building in Berlin, the last Russian Tsar Nikolaus II. is appointed, the Tower Bridge in London is opened to traffic and the first motor show opens at the Champs-Elysées in Paris. While the world seems to be beginning to turn faster and faster, the North Sea island of Borkum does not remain passive. As more and more tourists discover the island, the construction of magnificent first-rate hotels with a direct view of the beach began at the end of the 19th century.
This also applies to the widow of H. E. Behrends, who had already been accommodating her first guests in the Strandvilla Behrends since 1894 - the former name of the Ostfriesenhof. At that time, it advertised the best family apartments and single rooms, with a music room, a writing room, its own lawn tennis courts, a large veranda and a water pipe - at that time almost luxurious - and positioned itself early on as one of the best houses on the island. In the early 1920s, master chef Arno Dippmann took over the Strandvilla and integrated a hotel kitchen, which was continuously developed further.
Bernhard Sürken - at that time a lawyer and notary public in Meppen - bought the hotel in 1962 and gave it the name Strandhotel Ostfriesenhof. He leased it to the Bavaria Brewery for over 30 years. After his death he left the Ostfriesenhof to his son Harald C. Sürken. He decided not to sell the now overaged house and to restore and rebuild it lovingly instead. Harald C. Sürken, the current owner, had developed into an up-and-coming hotelier over the past few years and learned the hotel business from the very bottom up.
Today Harald C. Sürken and his team offer you personal service in a relaxed atmosphere. A warm hospitality awaits you on your arrival at the passionately run Ostfriesenhof Strandhotel on Borkum. Complemented by stylishly furnished rooms with a feel-good character, a restaurant with a selection of well-chosen regional and seasonal dishes and not to forget, a magnificent view of the beauty of the North Sea will give you the opportunity for an uncomplicated recreational holiday.
